AMD Debuts $3,999 Ryzen AI Halo Dev Kit to Challenge Nvidia DGX Spark
AMD is targeting local AI development with a $3,999 Strix Halo-powered system, leveraging 128GB of unified memory to challenge Nvidia's workstation dominance.
AMD has launched a direct offensive against Nvidia's workstation stronghold with the release of its Ryzen AI Halo developer kit. Priced at $3,999, the system is built around the flagship Ryzen AI Max+ 395 processor, codenamed Strix Halo, and comes equipped with 128GB of unified memory. The release positions AMD to capture machine learning engineers who need significant memory capacity to run large language models locally but are priced out of high-end enterprise hardware.
The defining architectural feature of the Strix Halo system is its massive unified memory pool. Unlike traditional PC architectures that split memory between system RAM and discrete GPU VRAM, AMD's APU design allows the CPU and the integrated RDNA 3.5 graphics compute units to share the same 128GB pool. This high-bandwidth interface bypasses the PCIe bottleneck, enabling the system to load and run parameters for models that would typically require multiple discrete workstation GPUs, which have recently seen steep price hikes.
